I think you're thinking Matt Lerer from 2003 or so. He finished 5th at sectionals, placed 2nd or 3rd at districts and ended up placing 3rd at the state tournament for Mentor. I think he also placed after transferring to Mayfield and then Beachwood. But I believe was a district alternate.

Please look at the teams Hawken, US, Gilmour, CVCA played. A very inflated 47-11. Lot of D5, D6 teams on those schedules. Warrensville Hts., Grand Valley, Tuslaw, Trinity, Beachwood, Manchester on their schedules. There's a reason none of them were state ranked like Dover, SVSM, Streetsboro...
