Clearly a mental case here so I doubt death is even remotely on the table, and lousiana law being French based operates differently than the rest of the nation.

I thought 1st degree murder had to be premeditated. This sounds more like 2nd degree murder. Got into an argument, and in the moment, willfully decided to shoot the guy. It's not like he went to the gym to kill the police officer. Am I missing something?

Killing a cop, along with being charged for robbery, probably elevated it to 1st degree.
