CINCINNATI, Ohio - On Thursday, the Ohio Prep Sports Writers Association in coordination with the Ohio High School Athletic Association announced the winner of the 34th annual Mr. Football award and the 2020 recipient is Roger Bacon senior running back Corey Kiner.

“Being named Mr. Football means the world to me,” said Kiner. “I am very honored to win this award not only for myself, but for my school. My father told me that I would do great things in high school football but I would never thought that it would amount to this.”

The LSU-commit helped lead Division V Roger Bacon to its first-ever regional championship in 2020. Kiner delivered knockout blows early and often to his opponents. Of his 35 rushing touchdowns, 28 of them came before halftime, including 18 first-quarter scores. He found the end zone once every 4.9 carries.

“Corey is a one of a kind,” said Roger Bacon head coach Mike Blaut. “He’s a once in a lifetime talent. His skill set is second to none. He is competitive, fast, quick, strong, smart, has great instincts, all the tools a running back needs.”

“Roger Bacon is my family,” said Kiner. “I knew that it would mean a lot more for me to stay here and win with my family. I knew in my heart that if we just kept pushing on, we would eventually turn things around and change the culture.”

That decision paid off. Over the last two seasons, Roger Bacon won 20 games, which are the most in a two-year period in the program’s history. It is also the first time the school has had back-to-back 10-win seasons.

“Corey’s impact on the program has been incredible,” said Blaut. “We could not have asked for a better relationship from the first day he walked on campus. With Roger Bacon being a small school, we constantly hear that athletes should not go here because they won't get college recruited or won't get what they deserve. Corey has destroyed all those notions and achieved everything any player would want.”

Kiner will go down as one of the most accomplished running backs to ever suit up in the Buckeye state. He was named first team All-Ohio twice, second team All-Ohio once and first team All-Southwest District four times. In 43 games, Kiner ran for more than 200 yards 18 times, including four contests of 300-plus yards. He finishes his career with 7,130 yards rushing, 10th most in Ohio history. His 116 rushing touchdowns, 125 total touchdowns and 772 points scored are all good for the third highest totals in the OHSAA record books.

Other finalists for the award included Mason Sullivan, Kirtland, 6-0/206, RB, Senior; Ian Kipp, Mentor, 6-2/215, QB, Sr.; Owen Treece, Van Wert, 5-11/190, QB, Sr.; Reid Carrico, Ironton, 6-3/235, RB/LB, Sr; Lorenzo Styles Jr., Pickerington Central, 6-1/190, WR/DB, Sr.; Peter Pedrozo, Westerville South, 5-11/180, QB, Sr.; Beau Brungard, New Middletown Springfield, 6-0/197. QB, Jr.; Davis Singleton, Byesville Meadowbrook, 6-3/200, QB, Sr.

Congrats to Corey. What a way to wrap up a phenomenal prep career.

With Wyoming's Evan Prater winning last year, and Kiner winning this year, I believe this is the closest proximity that (different) consecutive winners have ever gone to school within each other. Wyoming HS and Roger Bacon are just over 5 miles apart according to Google Maps.

Congratulations to Mr. Kiner on an incredible season & career at Roger Bacon. His impact at the school will never be forgotten as he broke nearly every record he could in school history! LSU is getting a great talent.

Also, congratulations to all of the other finalists on their great seasons as well, including (per the OHSAA):

Mason Sullivan, Kirtland, 6-0/206, RB, Sr.
Ian Kipp, Mentor, 6-2/215, QB, Sr.
Owen Treece, Van Wert, 5-11/190, QB, Sr.
Reid Carrico, Ironton, 6-3/235, RB/LB, Sr.
Lorenzo Styles Jr., Pickerington Central, 6-1/190, WR/DB, Sr.
Peter Pedrozo, Westerville South, 5-11/180, QB, Sr.
Beau Brungard, New Middletown Springfield, 6-0/197. QB, Jr.
Davis Singleton, Byesville Meadowbrook, 6-3/200, QB, Sr.

Congrats.

Confused though, many say the only real football is played in DI and 2.
I think full team wise, there's an argument to be made. Most D3 and lower teams just lack the numbers to play a big school schedule. There are players who would be stars at any level if HS ball though. Football is football though, and those lower division games are awful fun to watch

Congrats. Well deserved. I thought the Ohio State bias would give Carrico an advantage.

Plenty of D3 and down kids have been Mr. Football.

so what kind of year did the boy from Kirtland have?

Nothing too out of this world. Probably had something around 1500 rushing yards & 20 touchdowns or so in 11 games. I was genuinely surprised to see him as a Mr. Football finalist. It was his 3rd straight year making 1st Team All-Ohio as well. Also goes out as a three time state champion. Great kid.

Weird the Ironton kid didn’t win it but Ohio does love the LSU name after Burrow won the title and Heisman

Congats to Corey!

Good thing his father went to Bacon; doubt he would have went there otherwise.

I'll bite. Why is it weird? My guess is because you think he should have won? They are both great players. If it is because Carrico played defense, I get it, but RB didn't need Kiner to play defense or he would have. The plays he was in on defense, he wrecked havoc. Just look at his highlight film. If it is because Ironton beat RB, there are two thoughts on that. 1. Apparently Kiner was hurt the entire playoffs with an ankle injury. He didn't look like what people are used to seeing as he was limping in most games. Be thankful you didn't get the 100% Kiner as he is definitely a difference maker. 2. That means the Sullivan kid from Kirtland should get it over Carrico since he was on the team that beat Ironton.

Just tip your cap to all the nominees and Kiner as they are all great. There was a vote and it is what it is. I just think it is cool that there were three kids from D5 in the conversation. I also think the the Brogan McCaughey kid from St. X could be in the conversation next year.

Well deserved. I think his numbers were from playing the first half most games then sitting out as they usually had a big lead by then. I couldn’t imagine his numbers if he would have played full games through a full non COVID regular season. I wish him well at LSU

congrats to all the finalists

If you ever saw him play you would know why he is Mr. Ohio football he would have had same success at any level.
Kiner showed some impressive skills early on in playoff game vs. Versailles. He played the entire game and even on defense, but I wonder how much his ankle was hindering him. The boys from Versailles were excited to play against him and are interested to see how he does jumping from D5 high school football to power 5 SEC football.
We wish him good luck!
