Anathema - Judgement (1999)

My Ratings: 73.053
Rank: 1110 (out of 1895)

Best Song: Emotional Winter [75.6]

Atmospheric Rock

This caught me off guard as I have only listened to the older stuff by them..... Metal turned to Rock but still with the Doom lyrical elements but Doom is not rock sand this is not Stoner Rock so I guess we call that Atmospheric Rock. OK, I can do that but they still had elements of Goth and had touches of Progressive. The vocals were clean and as it grew on me I started to like it better. This one will grow on me.

Blue Cheer - New! Improved! (1969)

My Ratings: 74.220
Rank: 899 (out of 1896)

Best Song: Fruit & Icebergs [81.0]

Hard/Blues Rock

I believe I have only heard 1 song from this band until now..... Interesting album as side 1 and side 2 sound completely different and why was that, well..... it had a slightly different lineup for side 2 which included vocalist/Guitarist Randy Holden which I definitely liked much better. Unfortunately this was his only stance with Blue Cheer doing just 3 tracks but I am very curious to hear his solo project from the following year. The two bonus tracks are included in my ratings and I will definitely be doing some more Blue Cheer in the future.

The Howling Void - Bleak and Everlasting (2019)

My Ratings: 74.290
Rank: 890 (out of 1897)

Best Song: Bleak and Everlasting [75.4]

Funeral Doom

3rd album from these guys that I have listened to. This one really didn't have much going on and yeah, I know it is funeral doom so that is the point but there is usually more from this group..... This one is good but liked the other two much better.

R.E.M. - Monster (1994)

My Ratings: 78.837
Rank: 284 (out of 1901)

Best Song: You [87.0]

Alternative/Grunge Rock

This one passes up Automatic for the People as my favorite R.E.M. album. Never heard the song "You" before and it blew me away..... great stuff on that one and much better than the radio play songs from that album.

Monster is an interesting album for REM. Basically a return to their harder edge roots and away from the more acoustic fueled mega selling albums Out of Time and Automatic for the People. In hind sight it was the beginning of the end as the tour to promote the album had tragedies and an album later drummer Bill Berry left the band; they were a shell of themselves after.

By the way, I read somewhere that said they would be the biggest all original member reunion tour if they could pull all the guys together. I know a lot of folks in their 50s that would pay good $s post Covid to see these guys live if it happened.

Bob Dylan - The Times They Are a-Changin' (1964)

My Ratings: 73.161
Rank: 1097 (out of 1904)

Best Song: Ballad of Hollis Brown [86.0]

Folk Rock

It is hard to listen to a whole Dylan album but I did it. I liked 6 of the 10 tracks.

While the title track is an all time classic it is not one of his better early folk records. Go back one album and give The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan a listen, that one is packed with more accessible tunes including many Dylan classics like Blowin' in the Wind, Girl from North Country, Masters of War, A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall, and Don't Think Twice it's All Right.

My Ratings: 78.690
Rank: 295 (out of 1909)

Best Song: Rocky Mountain Way [90.0]

This was an album Joe Walsh did with Barnstorm but apparently they got no recognition which may have led to the break up.... anyhow, another solid album by Walsh. The non-radio tracks I liked the best were "Midnight Moodiess" and "Happy Ways".

This was one of our "go to" albums in high school. Before we went to school every morning, me or my brother would play "Rocky Mountain Way" to get us pumped up for the day. Excellent album.

When it comes to Joe Walsh I preferred So What. This has the more accessible version of "Turn to Stone" and includes a couple great Joe Walsh ballads, "Help Me Through the Night" and "Song for Emma" about losing his daughter.
