2022 Cleveland Browns Thread

Fool me once................. They were supposed to have a top 5 defense this year. I won't believe anything about the Browns anymore until I see it on the field.
I’m in the same boat. With a full season of Watson and what should be an improved defense there should be optimism for 2023, but the more likely result is this organization fugging it all up.

Yep. I'm such a sucker that I've been fooled at least 20 times by the Browns. But I'm sure that 2023 is "the year". Or not.

Top 5 defense with the Schwartz.

Ask yourself this, how many of Cleveland’s front 7 would start for either the Bengals, the Ravens or Steelers? The Browns proved they are the 4th best defense in the AFC North in 2022. Top 5 in the NFL for 2023……that’s a tough one.

AFC North: Bengals have Burrow so they are the favorite for the next 7-10 years. Ravens & Steelers are solid organizations with good coaching so they will be in the mix. The Browns……...Browns are 4th place until they prove otherwise.

Pittsburgh showed who they will be for the next decade … a .500 team …. Average QB with a good defense and coach … welcome to the world of mediocrity

Steelers were in a rebuild year & went 9-8 with a rookie qb. By no means am I saying Pickett is anywhere near a Burrow, Mahomes or Allen but his two 4th qrt drives to win the Raiders & Ravens games - he’s got a little something there. Wouldn’t you as a Cleveland fan hope/wish/love for your Browns to have a mediocre year like that?

I don’t know that the Steelers are doomed to mediocrity, but I don’t think they have their QB. Not a Pickett fan.

Tell me you haven't seen Schwartzs track record for turning around defenses without telling me.

You are assuming they'll run it back with the same players.

Steelers were in the basement the whole season till the last couple weeks...don't get too excited.

Oh and the Browns beat each of those teams this year with Joe Woods defense.

I hear you, but the Browns tend not to get their wins when it matters.

So you are assuming the Browns will have new defensive players yet they no 1st rounder and due to cap concerns no big contract FA.

I think we can agree that Clowney won’t be back but do you think they will get someone more talented than Clowney to replace him?

Not saying the Browns will be world beaters … we all know better … but the NFL is a QB driven league … and Pittsburgh fans are pumping their chest out about a rookie QB who threw 7 TD in 13 games because they beat 6/7 mediocre (sub .500) teams at the end of the year. But as Browns fans we all know about mediocre (or worse) when not having a good QB … we are the experts in that field … it is not easy to win in the NFL without top notch QB play … and I am not sold on Pickett just yet.

I don’t know any Steeler fan whose “pumping their chest” about Pickett. I can’t think of one thing Pickett does that screams he’s elite or has the potential to be elite but the 2 winning TD drives was big time NFL qb play. Pickett showed improvement as the season went along and after his first 3 games kept the turnovers to a minimum. He’s got some grit to him & the players seem to believe in him. Could Pickett be as good as a Cousins, Carr, Prescott, Tannehill, Dalton (5 playoff appearances) - yea I think he could. Last week Pickett cut his vacation short to go back to the Steelers training facility. What’s Watson doing?

Everyone should have a better idea of what Pickett is by about week 12 in 2023.

What you are describing is mediocre … like I said

PS - Watson took all the offense to the Bahamas last summer … not sure his plan for this year … I will let you know we he tells me … and yes, I will take Watson over Pickett in the years to come … and so would any GM in the NFL

When the Steelers are 4-8 yeah you'll have a good idea of what you have at QB.

I'm a life long Browns fan. And I am not impressed with Pickett. But a Browns fan talking trash to Stillers fans is just stooooopid. We have no leg to stand on.

The Steelers have had elite QB play for most of the past 50 years … the Browns have not (except for Bernie) … this is the main reason for the Steelers dominance over that span … well I don’t think the Steelers current QB situation is going to be elite … IMO it is going to be average … which will make the an average team, maybe a little better because they are well coached/run … to me, this points to being around a .500 team for the next few years … that is all I have been saying … my push back comes from Steeler fans who assume they will continue to be great just because they are the Steelers … no matter the QB … the QB matters.

The Bengals were in two Super Bowls in the eighties, how many did the stains er Browns play in?
What does that have to do with the Browns getting the best of the Steelers in the '80's?

Win five NFL Championship games, then we'll have a serious conversation.

Saw this interesting bit and also have heard some agent chatter on Josh Cribbs...

While his TV show is really a disaster and is leading to very limited marketing opportunities he did get great reviews for his stint as a special teams coach at the NFLPA college bowl practices. Below is what a PFF reporter wrote on his observations with regards to draft prospects:

The moment former return specialist Joshua Cribbs wants a job coaching special teams in the NFL, expect him to climb to the top of the profession quickly. Cribbs had complete control during his periods of practice. He was incredibly detail-oriented and articulated each fundamental and its application. Each player involved on special teams for the American team improved significantly throughout the week.

The Cleveland Browns:

League championships (8)
* AAFC championships (4) - 1946, 1947, 1948, 1949
* NFL championships (pre-1970 AFL–NFL merger) (4) - 1950, 1954, 1955, 1964

Vs their rivals…….
* Steelers: 63-80-1
* Bengals: 46-51
* Ravens: 12-34

OldSoulon was probably around for all 8 Brownie championships.

Far more interesting would be the record of the Browns/Ravens franchise, which is 1946-current vs the record of the expansion Browns 1999-current.

So, since 1950, when they joined the NFL, the Browns/Ravens franchise is:

629-478-11
6 league championships (4 NFL/2 Super Bowl)

That’s probably still behind, but in range of the Steelers franchise since 1950.

I know in some perverse re-writing of history the original Browns franchise and expansion Browns are wrongly lumped together as the Cleveland Browns for historical purposes, but the truth is the original Browns franchise has an unbroken history of continuous seasons from 1946 (and starting 1950 in the NFL) through 1995 as the Cleveland Browns and from 1996 to present as the relocated and renamed Baltimore Ravens.

The expansion Browns franchise is its own futile entity, manufactured from whole cloth. It did not exist prior to 1999 and cannot trace its pathetic lineage beyond 1999. Meanwhile, the original lineage of the franchise is still chugging along in Baltimore…thanks to Art Modell and Al Lerner…as one of the NFL’s premier franchises.

The good football fans in Cleveland have been deprived since 1996 of the team that hooked this town and region on football, through no fault of their own, and have been forced to pretend this current crap franchise that calls itself the Browns is somehow the same franchise of Graham, Motley, Brown, Warfield, Sipe, Kosar, etc, when the truth is they cannot trace any DNA back to Paul Brown’s team. That DNA flows through Baltimore since 1996.

May Modell and Lerner both rot in H3LL.
