While you are correct in that all four of those teams were first time champions in 1990 that was not the last time it happened. Good answer though.

Very good. A lot of people forget about Welcome Stadium. Welcome also hosted the 1974 AA championship game. I know the sites for the finals are chosen beforehand, but that 74 AA choice of Welcome ended up making absolutely zero sense geographically because the game featured Norwalk vs. Louisville Aquinas.

For #8, like oldschoolredev's answer you are correct in that all four of those teams were first time champions in 2000 but it is not the last time it happened.

#9 is correct. God job.

Question #1

Greg Thurman - Akron St. Vincent

Excellent.

I have never seen anything official from OHSAA, but I do know that the Class AA semifinal games were played the day before the Class A & AAA semifinals were played. Both games kicked off at the same time but in the Akron St.V-St.M vs Lake AA semi game the Irish scored in less than 2:30 minutes into the 1st quarter and Mr. Thurman scored the TD. The other AA semifinal was scoreless until the 2nd quarter thus I say that Mr. Thurman scored the first points in OHSAA playoff history. Mr. Thurman went on to play at Akron U.

Lake should not have been in the playoffs in the first place. Can anybody tell me why?

Question #2

Otis Jenkins - Lorain Clearview

Correct again. The Class A title game was an afternoon KO and Mr. Jenkins scored the first points for the Clippers. As I remember it Mr. Jenkins was a state champion sprinter and I think he got a scholarship to Louisville for football. They lost to Marion Pleasant on a fumble return TD, the 2nd of the game for Pleasant, as time expired to lose, 20-14. Tough way to lose.

I'm pretty sure that Clearview won the Class A track and field title the next spring and Marion Pleasant was the runner-up and the football coaches at each school, Don Kay at Pleasant and Wayne Ross at Clearview, were also the track coaches. I guess it was a little payback for Clearview.

According to the OHSAA points listed on their website, in 1972 in D2R7, Hannibal River actually placed 1st, with Lake 2nd and Ironton 3rd. However, from the Youngstown Vindicator on 11/13/1972, River is listed 3rd, behind Lake and Ironton. The impetus behind this is that, in 1972, wins against out-of-state teams did not count, and River had 2 against Magnolia and Weirton Madonna. Also, 3rd level points were used that year, but then never used after that after too many teams complained.

Interestingly, Greg Thurman was not only my position coach my freshman year at Walsh, but my Geometry teacher as well. Great coach, great teacher, even better person. Was sad to hear he passed a number of years back.

Third level points were used in 1973 also.

River should have been 1st and their administration did protest to OHSAA when the pairings were announced and Lake was listed as the qualifier in their region. OHSAA said no but a few weeks later admitted that River should have qualified instead of Lake. I remember reading that OHSAA gave River a plaque attesting that they should have qualified. As I remember it, it was blamed on a computer error.

The Harbin system was predicated on a 10-game schedule, at it still is. Even in 1972 OHSAA had provisions for teams that did not play 10 games, due to open dates, out of state teams or other non-OHSAA member teams (they were all treated as open dates), being awarded points for those games. At least it was listed that they did and how they did it.

At that time the Harbin points were just totaled up, 1st level plus 2nd level plus 3rd level. Highest point total got in. However even though it wasn't an average per game like today, teams with less than 10 games were awarded an average for the open date or dates and that number was used for their total for the missing games. They were supposed to divide the totals by games played and put that number in for the missing games in the respective levels. Something got messed up in River's case and OHSAA did not get it corrected until it was too late.

BTW I do have the original point totals and River was listed with 19 L1, 70 L2 & 240 L3 points for a total of 329. That was good for 3rd in the region and that is how Lake got in. The corrected totals that OHSAA show for River were 19 L1, 79 L2 & 300 L3 points for a total of 398 which was first in the region. OHSAA messed up.

OHSAA also seemed to be using an old computer (probably with Fortran). You would calculate a team's points by hand and get exactly 24.0000. Then the OHSAA list would come out and the team would be listed as having 23.9986, or something like that. The first two decimal points were usually good, but after that, who knew where those numbers came from.

I should cut OHSAA some slack because If I remember correctly OHSAA didn't run their own computers at the time the playoffs started. They had an outside firm in Columbus take care of the Harbins. I actually talked to the guy who did all the programming for them about 3rd level points and the little "glitch" the Harbin system had with 3rd level way back in 1973. I don't remember his name, but I think the name of the company was National Scanning.
