Only A Small Number

Minerva got off the list by winning Girls Cross Country this fall.
Waynesville HS in Warren County won their first title in Girls Soccer this fall.
Grandview Heights HS in Franklin County won their first OHSAA state championship in Boys Soccer last month.

I would have guessed Ottoville having a state championship in boys or girls basketball by now? I know they had some great teams over the years.

This brings up an interesting question.

Would you rather be an Ottoville or Continental, sending teams to state or at least deep in the tournament every decade or so with a few sustained runs in a sport, but never winning it.

Or Paulding, terrible at pretty much everything, but has a single, random track championship from 1960 to their name?

I'd rather be a consistent winner over time and lose deep in the tournament. I don't know anything about Paulding, but I'm sure that track championship from sixty years ago doesn't make them feel any better when they lose.

Does anyone have any disputes with the information provided by EagleFan? Please speak up if so.
I have no disputes, but as someone up-thread said, merges and splits complicate the history a little bit.

Another example is Lorain. The original Lorain Steelmen won a title, but the Lorain Titans have not. Certainly an argument that maybe the Titans should not be on the list because of that. (Lorain High School did not exist rom 1995 - 2010).

Same discussion happens when talking about # of team titles won. A school like Canton McKinley, for instance, is credited with 27 OHSAA titles, tied for 15th most. However, 16 of those were pre-1976. The original McKinley closed in 1976, and a new high school by the HOF was opened. They chose McKinley as the name, but what if they went with Canton Fawcett HS or some other name? Is the only reason we combine the history that they chose the same name?

My list of schools with no team OHSAA tournament titles. I tried to purge the closed, club, and non-OHSAA schools.

Thanks for all of the work. I don't know why, but seeing Bellbrook and Springboro on that list see surprising to me. Only because I believe they have quality athletic programs across a number of sports.

Boys bowling 2017
They aren't on the list of State Champions with 1 Westerville South is listed with one Boys Bowling Title And a total of 4 . Did they Win one also? If not they are getting credit for WC BB Title.

Indulge me for veering slightly off-topic, but I find it interesting that Bridgeport HS has two state championships, both in wrestling (The 1959 title led by Bobby Douglas, a two-time Olympian, World Championships medalist, and legendary coach), but none in any other sport, despite being one of a handful of American high schools to produce Hall of Fame athletes in at least two of the three major American professional sports (Phil Niekro in baseball & John Havlicek in basketball).

Looking at OHSAA's information, when Havlicek played, Bridgeport didn't even make it to the Regionals. And Niekro's baseball teams never made it to the final 4.

According to the OHSAA website in the bowling history section, Westerville Central won that title in 2017 (not South.)
Central had 2 boys in the top 20 in the individual competition. South had 0 boys in the top 50 in the individual competition.

Also, Westerville South does indeed have 4 state championships. That list doesn't include their boys basketball title from 2016 when they beat Lima Senior

They had a great wrestling coach named George Kovalick back in those days. They won many OVAC titles, beating many schools which were much larger.

Kovalick did coach baseball as well. In fact, he lead West Liberty to an NAIA championship with Joe Niekro pitching for them.

Central won in 2017. I just saw that summary chart and looks like OHSAA made an error there. It is also out of date, as St. Edward is at 62.

West Clermont has never won one, but they’ve only existed about 4-5 years. Not sure if the consolidated Glen Este and Amelia ever did. I’ll have to check.

Followup, Amelia won a baseball title, Glen Este was shutout.
Amazing-- I was going to say that Glen Este (which had some pretty good baseball teams, back in the 1970's) HAD maybe won (in baseball)-- I NEVER would have guessed on Amelia being the one that HAD.

That absolutely, positively does not count.
I think that it should-- the professional leagues credit championships for a franchise that has moved around-- or even disappeared, and then been reborn-- the NFL is apparently crediting the current Cleveland Browns franchise (circa 1998) with the championships won by the previous Cleveland Browns franchise (now in Baltimore-- which franchise is NOT being credited with those championships). Conversely, the Indianapolis Colts are claiming the championship(s) won by the Baltimore Colts, in addition to that won by the Indianapolis team. The Oakland A's have nine championships-- with many of them won as the Philadelphia A's; the Golden State Warriors claim the title won by the Philadelphia Warriors, and the Los Angeles Lakers claim the titles won by the Minneapolis Lakers.

Sticking with that idea, I think that West Clermont should be taken off this list of non-championship winners-- if Amelia (a predecessor school) won one-- and I think that either or both of Mercy and Macauley won state titles that should (now) be credited to the combined school-- as should championships won by Greenhills or Forest Park to the successor, Winton Woods (which, of course, also has some under its current name, now).

I can see both sides. The pro issue is the team moves it is a continuation of the team from another city. The Browns are different because when the City and fans sued the NFL and Modell about the move the agreement to settle included an the expansion team that is the current Browns and the history would stay in Cleveland with the name.

I think the big school consolidations of the 50s and 60s are different because I would guess in most cases entire “districts” were merged but in others they may have split. I know there were no high schools in what is now Massillon Tuslaw the kids went from the township grade schools to Massillon Washington, Dalton, Canal Fulton (now CF Northwest) or Navarre/Brewster (now Fairless) depending on where they lived and if they were going to go to school past 6 or 8 grade. I have been in some schools where the trophy case includes the championship (state or league) of a predecessor school while others do not. During those consolidations some took on new names and the history disappears for the old schools and others one Legacy school just got bigger and their records continue.

There is also a difference in the local school recognizing the history (keep alumni happy) and OHSAA recognizing the school.

And your comparisons of professional teams are absolutely, positively absurd.

Sometimes the school district closes an old building and replaces it with a new building. That is perfectly okay as far as recognizing history. It's not the same as the creation of a totally new high school.

Are you also going to say that Westerville North, Westerville South, and Westerville Central can claim the history of the old Westerville High School?

Actually, Westerville South is considered to have been the original Westerville HS, having been renamed once North opened in 1975. This is similar to Hilliard's situation, as the original Hilliard HS became Hilliard Davidson in 1997 when Darby opened. Conversely, there have also been situations where a single high school split into 2 completely new schools (e.g. Lakota splitting into Lakota East and Lakota West in 1997).

As for championship recognition, there can be a difference between official recognition and how something is treated by the local community. Does Amelia's baseball championship count for West Clermont? Clearly it doesn't, but there's no harm in having the trophy and banner in the school for the alumni's sake. In one extreme example, in Columbus, the trophies won by the old Wehrle HS are displayed at Ready HS, their old rival.

I don't argue with keeping the trophies. You have to put the trophies and banners somewhere. I think it's great that Ready would keep the Wehrle tropies.

I just don't think it's part of the official history.

I also don't object to claiming alumni.

Nothing absurd about it... and Yup on Westerville.

West Clermont should get credit for Amelia's championship, Lakota East and West should get credit for Lakota's championship(s), and Hamilton (both before and after) should get credit for any that Hamilton Taft and Garfield may have won, when it was split.
