The D2 Cincy Sectional comprised of 20 teams this year is going to be very competitive as usual in being played at Mason and Princeton come February. Here are the records through games of Wednesday 1/6/21. We'll continue updates throughout January and until the seeding and draw on February 7th---many teams have been affected by quarantine from COVID in December, so teams are playing 10+ games in January to get caught up prior to February seeding: These are not seed rankings--just their overall records.

Batavia-- 8-0

Wouldn't a better way to sort them be by winning %? 3-3 Hughes and 3-6 Aiken aren't the same record wise, just to name one example.

Yeah that is another way to do it (maybe you can do the %'s), but for seeding purposes the coaches will more than likely look at total wins and quality of wins--especially in this COVID quarantine season where some teams have yet to play a game.

Bringing your tourney A Game already.

Pretty good seeding Zing---I think we're going to have to wait and see where teams like Indian Hill, Shroder, Wyoming will be record-wise due to lack of games due to COVID shutdowns and quarantines---this year I believe you have to reward those teams that have played the most games and have secured a higher # of wins ---kind of like UC's argument for making the Final 4 of the football playoffs over OSU. IH at #10 may be a bit too high right now as they just played their first game last night, albeit a win over CHCA.

IMO I think it would be fascinating if they made the tourney draw a blind draw this year.
I'd like to see the top 4 seeded like they did in the old days---those 4 would pick their spots on the brackets and then the rest of the unseeded teams would draw pills 1-16 and follow that order in taking places on the open spots on the bracket. There would be some awesome 1st round match-ups and it wouldn't matter how many or few games a school got to play due to Covid quarantines regarding how to vote them 1-20.

This nugget from the SWDAB January Minutes regarding D1 & D2 Districts is interesting :
District Brackets
  • Phil Poggi provided the board an update on the District tournament brackets and locations. All sites agreed to space games 3 hours apart.
  • Girls Sites are set with game times forthcoming. Boys D3 & Boys D4 are set and Scott Kaufman, Phil Poggi and John Kronour will choose neutral sites for D1 and D2 Boys based on availability
Guessing that's why the Sectional brackets for all four divisions have been posted for boys and girls, but only the girls District brackets have been posted.

Any updated list and rankings? Love reading this stuff.
Thanks--I will update after the games from Saturday are completed--a few big ones tonight as Badin is at Ross, Lakota East at Fenwick, Indian Hill at Taylor, and Mt. Healthy at Wyoming. Roger Bacon being on a Covid pause is untimely with 2 weeks til tourney draw.

Updated Cincy D-2 Records after games of 1/23/21--seed meeting in 2 weeks on 2/7/21:

Ross-- 14-2

Batavia-- 13-0

McNicholas-- 9-2
Blanchester-- 9-5

In many key match-ups this past week it made no sense--- Wyoming beat Ross but lost to Mt. Healthy; Ross lost to Wyoming but handily beat Mt. Healthy and Badin; Taylor got hammered by Indian Hill, who has played just 5 games--these were some examples of results that showed how close this sectional sets up. Others trying to get games made-up from quarantine, or not playing due to pausing like Roger Bacon---still really difficult to determine teams 1 thru 10 with voting taking place beginning February 4th.

My Top 10 right now with 2 weeks until the seeding meetings looks this way:

1. McNicholas 9-2
2. Woodward 11-2
3. Ross 14-2
4. Wyoming 6-4
5. Roger Bacon 7-2 (bad time to be on pause)
6. Batavia 13-0
7. Indian Hill 4-1 ( will keep rising as they play games and win)
8. Fenwick 6-3
9. Taylor 12-3
10. Aiken 7-8 (just ahead of Blanchester due to 63-60 win on 1/8)

How did you come up with the power rating?

How did you come up with the power rating?
It's a program my son devised for both D-1 and D-2 that takes into account records, strength of leagues and schedules, and this year the # of games played or not played due to quarantine pauses---he will update it after this weekends games and before the voting begins next Thursday.

Updated records as of games played thru 1/31/21---the OHSAA window for voting opens up on Thursday 2/4/21-Games played Monday and Tuesday will go onto the resume for each team--Power rankings updated soon:

Cincy D2 Power Ratings (based on won/loss records, strength of schedule, games played thus far due to quarantine/pauses) as of 2/1/21--

1. McNicholas 12-2 (57.989)
2. Ross 16-2 (54.412)
3. Woodward 13-3 (53.432)
4. Roger Bacon 8-4 (52.740)
5. Wyoming 8-4 (50.124)
6. Indian Hill 6-1 (49.253)
7. Fenwick 8-4 (48.263)
8. Taylor 13-3 (46.715)
9. Aiken 8-9 (38.406)
10. Batavia 13-2 (37.971)
11. Hughes 7-7 (37.782)
12. Badin 7-11 (37.328)
13. Blanchester 10-6 (31.715)
14. Bethel-Tate 8-5 (31.449)
15. N. Richmond 8-8 (31.350)
16. Monroe 11-7 (30.740)
17. Wilmington 8-8 (30.311)
18. Norwood 7-9 (26.551)
19. C. Massie 0-13 (13.656)

Big gap between teams 1-8 and 9-18, but some teams in the bottom half are capable of pulling an upset if things fall right on a given night---it will be very interesting this year in the draw if the top teams take the 5 available byes to avoid playing teams who may have a positive covid case and then it knocks them out of playing in the next round of games--less games played in the sectional, then less chance to be in contact----all strategies are on the table this year to stay as healthy as possible.

Cincy D2 Records as of 2/3/21 that will be entered by each team into the voting site by midnight---voting runs from 2/4/21 til noon on 2/6/21--each team will vote 1 thru 18 (can't vote for themselves) and that will determine the seeds for the zoom Draw Meeting at 2:00 on Sunday 2/7/21. Brackets can be found at swdab.org under Boys Basketball after the draw is finished. Should be some good first round games at Mason and Princeton and most certainly the 2nd round and sectional finals will be very competitive this year--some quality teams in the 8 win-range and up in this season of quarantines effecting some teams not only once, but twice--that's 4 weeks of missed games and practices!!

Hughes beat Trotwood last night by 1 in a huge upset.

1 - McNick
2 - Ross
3 - Woodward
4 - Indian Hill
5 - Wyoming
6 - Bacon
7 - Fenwick
8 - Taylor
9 - Hughes
10 - Batavia (Only because of record) I think they are 1 and done.

I agree exactly with you on #1 thru #5, but I'd reward Batavia for their 15 wins by putting them at #6 and Taylor at #7--Bacon and Fenwick at 8-6 and 8-5 would be at #8 and #9 and Hughes with that big win last night at #10---all three of them could get opening wins from those spots as well. I do think some of the 8-win teams definitely will be a tough 1st round match-up.

Hughes just beat Batavia by 10 on Saturday and they also recently lost to Western Brown. Their schedule is so bad I just can't reward them with that high of a seed.

Yeah Batavia led by 2 heading into the 4th qtr vs.Hughes, but lost by 8---15 wins vs. 8 wins, so maybe Hughes is a notch above Batavia head-to-head and I could put them in that Hughes, Batavia, Taylor triangle---Bacon and Fenwick with multiple quarantines maybe should be at 9 and 10 as they have struggled returning to the court. Who avoids quarantine at tourney-time is going to be really crucial--taking byes may be the smartest thing to do this year---less games in sectional mean less chance to get covid or play someone that has it and be quarantined.

If the girls draw is any indication, teams are not thinking this way. I think only one #1 seed took a bye, and several byes ended up going to double-digit seeds, as usual.
On the boys side, it seems there are a number of teams adding games these last few weeks to get as many in as possible. I don't see many teams taking byes to avoid playing games.

#2 Mason and #5 Edgewood took byes in girls D1---we'll see if Princeton going into quarantine a third time resonates with any teams--Princeton will now be down until a day or two before the sectional begins--unless they choose a bye to have more time to practice. I'm sure many teams will do as usual and think it can't happen to them. There are 5 byes available in the Cincy D2 sectional, so we'll see on Sunday.
