The AFC has almost all the great young QB's

Looking at the AFC it's hard not to be impressed with all the great young QB's on display.

From 2017 you have:

* Mahommes. IMO Mahommes is the best QB in the NFL.

* Watson. Is very good.

From 2018 you have:

* Allen & Jackson who look to be the best of a very strong group. If Allen keeps improving he may turn out to be the best QB in the NFL. Yea I said it.

* Mayfield is solid and looks to have found a coach who knows how to use him.

* Darnold is teetering but if he can get a situation like Cleveland or Buffalo he could rebound. And if he doesn't there's a decent chance the Jets win the Lawrence lottery adding another potentially great young QB to the AFC.

From 2019 you have:

* Minshew. Porn stash not withstanding he's shown that he can be an Andy Dalton level player which means he will have a solid career.

* Drew Lock, Showed flashes of greatness and has a good chance to be Denver's QB for years to come.

From 2020 you have:

* Burrow. Sure it's to early to claim he's the real deal but I am. This guy has been more then impressive.

* Herbert. Who hasn't been impressed by this kids solid start?

* Tua. If Tua is as good as a lot of the experts believe it will mean the AFC is beyond ridiculous in QB talent.

It's an exciting time to root for teams in the AFC. There will be some epic QB battles over the next decade.

How is this for the worst take on QB's coming out in the 2018 NFL draft.

There are two quarterbacks in this year’s draft class who will emerge as stars, without question—UCLA’s Josh Rosen and USC’s Sam Darnold.

Okay but it gets worse:

There are mock drafts that have Allen going No. 1 and Mayfield going No. 5, with Darnold and Rosen potentially falling out of the top 10. If any team passes on those two for Allen or Mayfield, that team should be dissolved.

In all honesty, I pray that the scouts for the teams at the top of the draft don’t overlook them too. They are generational talents, and much more suited for the NFL game than Mayfield or Allen—and don’t even get me started on Lamar Jackson.

I mean dude:

Talk to me in a year, or maybe in five years, or ten. When Rosen and Darnold are taking over the league while Allen and Mayfield have faded into obscurity, I’ll be here, giving everyone a nice dose of “told you so” for good measure.

Mayfield and Allen are playing well this year.

Now, I hope Mayfield falls on his face, but right now he is doing well.....

Most of the young QB's from the last 4 drafts are playing great. Those of us who watch HS football shouldn't really be that surprised given the outstanding QB play at that level.

Interesting thread. Hadn't really thought about it because the NFC has had some young QBs. But none are really performing. The best of the bunch is Kyler Murray and his rating is 87. Jones is hurt, Haskins is struggling and Wentz numbers are pretty bad.

No doubt the AFC has the edge on good young QBs. The first 4 you list are excellent. But let's slow down a little:
- Too early to say on Lock, Herbert.
- Tua hasn't played.
- Also too early, Burrow has 4 games and looks good, but might be dead by mid-season behind that line
- Darnold is clearly not good
- Minshew and Mayfield are in the 'maybe' category

NFC has Kyler Murray, Goff, Wentz as good young QBs. Garropolo, Haskins and Daniel Jones are 'maybes' for me.

Haskins just got benched today. His days as a starter are likely over. Wentz looks to be in disarray and may never recover. Goff is looking good and worth his extension.

I don't know if Washington is ready to kick Haskins to the curb just yet. I think the team wanted to justify the 1st round pick they spent on him and put him in before he was ready. Typical mistake by a dysfunctional franchise from the top down. I think he'll get another shot. I agree with you on Wentz. He might have peaked in his rookie year. He's not a lost cause, but maybe a new address, away from Philly, could help him.

lotr, you aren't far off on Allen as best QB in the NFL. I haven't done an in depth look but a cursory glance shows he's top 5 in a lot of categories + he is a dangerous runner. I've been incredibly impressed with his season so far. I saw a couple good tweets this morning about him I thought you'd enjoy:

Thanks Orin. Allen showed flashes last year but his improvement through 4 games this season has been off the charts. Remember when he came out of Wyoming the story about Allen was that he had incredible physical tools and IF he ever developed them then he would be a fantastic NFL QB. The issue was that a majority of the experts felt there was almost a zero percent chance he could develop those skills.

A little help would go a long way with Wentz. He has no receivers of note and Ertz has been awful. Goedert is hurt. Jeffery should be back soon which should help a little.

I think I've been most impressed by Josh Allen's growth. It's like the light just came on.

I suspect that's exactly what happened with Allen.

When you look at his football life story the key takeaway is until he got to Wyoming he had no formal QB training.

There was a picture making the rounds before last Sunday's Bills/Raiders game showing a 16 year old Allen posing with Carr at the Fresno State summer camp. Allen wanted to play at Fresno State more then anything. In the only camp Allen ever attended Fresno State put him with the kids they had no interest in.

When he graduated HS he didn't even get a preferred walk on offer. He went to Jr College where they basically had him run off tackle every play. He then sent out over 1000 videos to almost every college football head coach, offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator. The only schools to get back to him were Wyoming & Eastern Michigan. EM offered him a scholarship but withdrew it when they learned he was making a visit to Wyoming.

Bottom line is this kid has had to fight for every scrap he's gotten in football. This makes an impression on a young man and it's his hard work and willingness to be coached that explains his meteoric rise the last 5 years. Of his elite physical tools there can be no doubt.

Another QB that had a similar history was Joe Burrow. Think about how this guy grew from Ohio State back-up to LSU starter to having the greatest college football season a QB has ever had. Now he's hit the ground running as the first pick in the NFL draft. Who would have predicted this in the immediate aftermath of "losing" to Haskins in 2018?

When you look at the drive and focus of both Allen & Burrow its almost otherworldly. It's not hard to believe that these two guys will be at the top of the AFC for years to come.

Burrow had the advantage of growing up in a QB family and getting attention from being Ohio Mr. Football. He was really something playing for Athens. Funny how he's now succeeding like no other rookie QB in recent history while Haskins is headed to the bench.

I like how hard Allen plays. You won't often see a QB face mask a D lineman and throw him down like he did late in the Rams game.

Heard about Haskins after my post, but IMO he is in a bad situation. Terrible franchise with subpar talent around him, and they threw him into the fire. I think he will be decent down the road. Size, smarts, and a very good arm. Could also be my Buckeye colored glasses.

Wentz has been victimized by never having a healthy team around him. They are constantly playing without 2 or 3 of their top receivers the last few years, and the OL is always hurt also. He may need a change of scenery, but he will be a very good QB.

Minshew is underrated. Plays for a god awful organization and has a terrible OL, yet still performs well. He’s a winner if the Jags ever decide to stop selling off all their good players.

You just have to hope Wentz doesn't get killed or shell shocked before that time comes. He's a talented kid.

Burrow would have had a serious shot at being the starter at tOSU if he didn't get injured during spring practice. Under the pressure cooker that is Ohio State no way were they going to make a call on a QB without having a full spring to make a decision so he moved on with the blessing of the staff, would have been really interesting to see what would have happened if he went to UC. Of more interest is his tap dance with Nebraska, his family ties were there and it was his dream school, but neither Pellini while in HS nor Frost when transferring would offer him a scholarship.

That's the kind of decision making that takes a coach from Nebraska to YSU.

I had forgotten that. Imagine saying "nope, I passed on Joe Burrow, we're all set with Adrian Martinez." Lol.
