Should there be more district meets?

I don't know about the rest of the state but in BG tickets and seating was very hard to come by. I would like to see them expand the number of district meets to enable more grandparents, siblings, friends and teammates that didn't qualify to watch. I know there would be additional costs but I think ticket revenue would exceed costs.

My suggesting for D1 is to have 7 (1 NW, 2 in SW, C and NE) this would also stop Cleveland area schools from driving across the state. Only winners would auto quality to state the rest on time.

The same time the number of qualifiers should be cut. In NW currently there are 32 individuals I would cut that to 20 by going to 4 heats to 2 heats of each event would enable a site to host 2 districts on Saturday (NW case would be a D2 meet).

Does NW do boys/girls at the same time? If so, there's your answer. Split into two meets. SW does boys in the am, girls in the pm. Seating for D1 boys isn't bad. The problem is college pools aren't built for spectator swimming.

I agree with Doc Onc. The auto-qualifiers are screwing faster kids out of a chance to swim at state.

Yes boys and girls same time. Splitting would be a fine solution. I have no issue not having auto-qualifiers but OSHAA likes to have representatives from all parts of the state in all sports so don't see them doing away with it. Looking at D1 boys there were two kids one in Breaststroke and other in 200 IM that made state and were not in top 24. So impact is small overall. Obviously if you were the kids that missed out (or made it) it is huge.

It is time to go to 3 divisions in swimming, 54 schools represented at BG in DII only....
Need to remember for OHSAA to consider a school to have a team they need to have 7 participate at the sectional meet. Quite a few schools do not meet that standard. Based on OHSAA statements there will need to be more than 500 schools before they add a 3rd division. Last year there was 261 boys and 325 girls. I don't believe there will ever be a 3rd division just not a pools around the state to add that many teams.

Instead of going 3 divisions, each division should add an additional heat to the state meet. You would have 32 swimmers in each event instead of 24. This would effectively almost add another division as you would be inviting 16 more swimmers across the 2 divisions. Look at 32nd place on the all 4 district list that swimmeet.com posted. 32nd is still super fast amongst the events

If space is an issue, can split the gender meets in half. Girls d2 prelims during the AM and Boys d2 prelims at night.
Diving mon-tues; d2 weds and thurs; d1 fri and sat

I like the idea of adding more swimmers but if that is done the genders need to be split. I think you just move diving to different pool there is not the need for the seating that canton has for the diving events.

The meet's long enough as it is. Prelims take 3.5 hours +. More swimmers does not mean a better meet. I did what you recommended and looked at the 32nd time (that's a great resource btw). Those times are nowhere near state-caliber swims. 1:45 2free? 1:57 IM? 4:45 500? It's not 2012. Besides, unless NFHS rules differ from USA Swimming, you can't circle seed past three heats.

you are exactly right, and this is the best argument for moving the state meet to columbus, 3 heats of 10...

Where would you move the meet?

For the “move the meet to Columbus” folks, McCorkle has 27% fewer seats than Branin, paid parking and very little room outside the pool. This is by far the best argument for NOT moving the meet to Columbus. Let’s revisit in eight years or so when the current contract is up.
Non-sequitor about where the meet is aside, why expand the number of swimmers?

My first choice would be just doing the diving at OSU. Really it could be at any pool that has two diving boards. It does not need to be near the swim meet. It really is a different sport that just gets combined with swimming since each is done in water.

Easy fixes to state tournament:

1). no automatic district qualifiers unless a swimmer records a time that would have made top 3 the year before. It is pure socialism to insist every district has someone in every event

2) eliminate the gestapo and apparatchiks who run the state meet. Sell blocks of numbered seats on Ebay and let people in anytime the want to- no more stupid waiting in freezing wind. Hire friendly staff who don’t act like the meet is a euro soccer game

3). Save all the self congratulating awards for officials for after or at dinner the night before- boring and buzzkills

OSU doesn't want the meet. It is the only state championship that they are not interested in hosting. I got this from our school AD. Just a response for information purposes

How many years was it at the horseshoe?
I know it was at the shoe throughout the 80's and into he 90's.. Don't know about the 70's. Then recently there was a rotation and the championship was played at the shoe in 2015? It was when X played Iggy and X won in a pretty big upset. I have heard that it changed when they went to seven divisions and could not get all the games in on Friday and Saturday. I watched the Fairfield-Ed's game from my dorm in '86. I went up to Columbus to watch CAPE play in in the early 80's with my Dad on a whim because we knew Carlos Snow and Tracy Dula. Probably has not played at the Shoe regularly for over 20 years.

2015 & 2016 Moved from Canton/Massillon to Columbus due to Canton's Fawcett replacement (raze & rebuild)
