OHSAA Basketball should have 5 divisions--coaches association has petitioned for it since the 90's. The big D1 schools have a massive advantage over the smaller D1 schools like Franklin, Turpin, Mt. Healthy, Anderson, Kings etc... when it comes to tourney time. All those schools have strong football teams and can make a playoff push because they are all D2 in football--not sure why basketball can't have 5 divisions--I'm guessing it's a $'s concern to run another division tourney up through Columbus. Thoughts?

Discussing Franklin there is even more of a disparity between football and basketball. They are D1 in basketball but they are actually D3 in football, and they were 28 boys from being D2, so it wasn't like it was right on the line. I'm not sure the reasoning of not going to more divisions for basketball, but if they did I think it would be a good improvement.

Even if you double the number of teams in a division it would only add one more round to the tourney for that division. Not a big deal. Use a bell curve. D1 and D4 would probably have smaller amounts of teams. D2 and D3 would have more teams. I’m sure there’s some mathematical formula that could be used to distribute teams so that they are in divisions without such huge differences in enrollment. And then allow anyone who wants to move up to D1 the option to do so.

As close to the line as it gets. Franklin was 3 boys away from D2. 40% of the D1 school have more boys than Franklin have boys and girls both.

Basketball needs a another division just like football. Look at the gap in D-1

Franklin is D-3 in Football!

Don't forget about the 9th, 8th and 7th grades. That would make Franklin having the top 5 teams in the league. It will be interesting to see who the 6th best team is?

Could the Franklin JV be the 2nd best team in the league. You might think I'm crazy. Wait and see!!
You are spot on !! If you and I took Franklins top 12 players and I picked one , you picked one etc. etc. One of us would win the league and the other would be runner-up. Who knows they may tie for First.

Franklin that good or the league just that bad? They have not fared to well in the d1 tourney. And really haven't done well in the d2 since Kennard graduated.

The SWBL is just to weak for a team to be successful in D1 or D2 unless you are a star play like Kennard even with him they still did not get to state tourney...

Is that the freshman? I was at two summer league were milton had a frosh that my personal eyes had him top 5 of all players there.

Good for Milton. They have struggled for the last several years. Maybe with the new league and player they can have some success

The new league will be very good at basketball. I know ME and TC have some very, very talented teams coming. Will it pan out, who knows.

There is talent coming up in Milton, East, TC, Bethel and Northridge. Lehman is an unkown as is Riverside. Covington may be the bottom feeder of that new league.

That's not to mention Bethel and Northridge... those 2 schools typically have a lot of talent, and I expect them both to be at the front of the league in basketball at the very beginning.

Northridge unsure, have not seen them. Not a lot of talent in the 7- 11 classes right now at Bethel. Expect them to be lower-middle of the pack starting out. But, a lot of potential long term to be a basketball power. Dont see it short term (2-4 years)

You could be right. I feel like Northridge is one of those schools that gets a lot of move in and transfers from the city schools. They are only 2-3 move ins from being very competitive. Bethels growing enrollment should help them be competitive. They definitely aren't as good as they were 2-3 years ago, but I expect them to get back to that. Or atleast I would think, although I am surprised at how bad they are at some of the other sports right now.... (football and baseball).

I was told by a family member in Miami Co. that Bethel has a really good Freshman and 7th grade group. Not saying he's a basketball expert, but he thinks they will be talented.

Last years Northridge 7th and 8th grade teams were terrible. They will need kids to move into the district to make them competitive. This seems to have been the case for the last 6-8 years. At Northridge, the Jr. High teams has had no bearing on how well the High school program does.

Northridge has been to the regionals twice in the last 5 years lost to Trotwood in the regional championship last season and CJ in 15' in the regional semis. They should run through that new conference.

TC sweep Var, JV, 7th and 8th last year. That is what I was basing my worry about them on. Things change quickly though and they may be fine.

Bethel/Northridge is the type of place that can change in the blink of an eye. I know Northridge gets a lot of transfers but remember a few years back when Bethel got a move in from Bishop Gorman HS in Las Vegas? Ryan Rose, that showed up out of nowhere and played his Junior/Senior year at Bethel. He ended up averaging like 25 points per game and was a first team all state player.

Milton has the makings of a VERY good team and with Berner as coach they should challenge for the SWBL. Northridge has been the top-dog but I see Waynesville, MU and Madison challenging. Waynesville is always tough.
Brumbaugh being a Frosh, he probably won't be a dominant force but the kid was dunking the ball as a 8th grader. He's a pretty good football player too.

As for the TRC, that is a couple of seasons away. alt can happen in the meantime.
