Over the years most of us have been involved and dedicated in the financial support of organizations, family member, events and other functions.
Wife and support a little boy in Thailand and we have bought goats for families in Africa. All very rewarding because we see the benefits. Disaster relief when those events happen, local church hunger program, clothing drives and Veteran organizations. I support political candidates in both parties especially locally. Area school and sports fund drives, Habitat for Humanity and I help in the building of some of the homes, just to name a few. Yes, there is a family member we help but we are causes not to enabling them
Note that there a few national organizations that we will not support ever.
I never give to anyone that comes to my door…. I should consider we are 160 feet off the road… but no.

What are some ( nat all) of the organization, events and others that you are pleased to offer finical support?

What organization for whatever reason you will not contribute to?

I usually try to give money to certain community leaders that give money to people trying to raise kids whose parents are addicted to drugs

Mission Aviation Fellowship. Had occasion to use their services a couple times. Amazing people in this world, they are some of them.

Purdue. It's an alma mater and I like their dedication to students. I can't think of a single Prof/GA that didn't seem prepared to teach me, didn't show desire to teach me and most I felt taught very well and were welcoming in office hours. They were one of the first to create an Engineering Service Program, I donate to that specifically. They have many programs to try and keep college affordable; frozen tuition/housing for 7 years. They're trialing a program in which students obtain their loans from the University instead of a bank and pay-back is based upon wages. Lower wage, lower payment... Minoroties/First Gen were comparatively successful which is unusual but on the premise that not enough were meeting standards for entrance, Purdue created a high school (put it in an old warehouse) in one of the poorer sections of Indy and were asked after just one year to build another. So it seems to be on the right track.

A sprinking of this and that locally. Mostly education related.

I avoid like the plague, United Way. They've had too many we don't learn scams. I also avoid charities that deal primarily in cash. I know some of the people involved that I wouldn't hand them money.

Matthew 6:1-4. We are to keep our charitable donations to ourselves, so that we can receive our reward in heaven. Boasting about them on earth ito impress others is just selfish boasting.
Do you see someone "boasting?" Personally, I'm interested in hearing of communities that are reliably doing good works so that I may choose to support them. I think I trust word-of-mouth, even anonymously. I can take it to CharityWatch or similar to decide if that recommendation is valid for MY needs.

It's the Jesuit in him.

I will give Zona the benefit of the doubt here. I tend to agree yet do not believe anyone was boasting.

Along with the private academic institutions I have attended Edwin's is an organization that has my support: https://edwinsrestaurant.org/about-us/

EDWINS Leadership & Restaurant Institute is a 501(c)(3) organization. We give formerly incarcerated adults a foundation in the culinary and hospitality industry while providing a support network necessary their long-term success. Our mission three-fold: is to teach a skilled and in-demand trade in the culinary arts, empower willing minds through passion for hospitality management, and prepare students for a successful transition home.

EDWINS Leadership and Restaurant was founded in 2007 with the belief that every human being, regardless of their past, has a right to a fair and equal future. In 2011, we started teaching in Grafton Correctional Institution. Shortly thereafter, we opened the restaurant on Nov. 1, 2013.

Having had 11 years of education at Jesuit institutions, I do agree that they have an air of superiority about them. This pompous attitude has definitely affected the students , including myself, who were taught by them. Also, of all the Catholic orders, they are the richest. I apologize if my comment killed what the OP was trying to convey.

It was a movie about Jesuits (The Mission) that motivated a particular aspect of my travel, which led me to Mission Aviation Fellowship.... so... all on-topic. :D

Wow. You and I are in complete agreement for once.

Mission Aviation Fellowship. Terrific organization. I had the good fortune once to have a corporate tenant bail out on a condo lease with three months left paid, due to a transfer. Almot immediately upon getting this news, we heard an announcement at church that an MAF family coming on furlough had been double-booked at a "parsonage" house and needed something quickly. Turns out the pilot's in-laws lived about 3 miles from our place. We had a pool and tennis courts there that they loved, and I still got paid to review tenants for a month and still double-dip for two. Sharing the blessing with them was a no-brainer.

I have a friend and a nephew that are both Purdue Engineering alumni, and it does sound by all accounts to be a terrific example of higher education done right. i did not know about their high schools, but they sound worthy indeed.

United Way seemed to have lost it's way quite a while ago. It's a shame.

I always take a swipe because Jesuits have this pompous air about them.

Huh. One of my boys attends a Jesuit University, and I don't get that at all..........and I'm not even a Friday fish-eater. Terrific people all over the place there.

Maybe there is some sort of "Catholic cred" competitiveness that makes Jezzies flex on you ?

Nice to hear.

Well, that's just great. I hope this isn't like buying a silver Buick, and then seeing silver Buicks everywhere you turn. It's gonna suck if there is Jesuit Superiority leaping out from behind every tree when we move my kid back to school this fall!!

I don't mind kids coming to the door for school fundraisers - I give them credit for getting out there and learning to interact with adults. Unless I know them, I never buy anything that has to be ordered. But I always tell them if they have the chocolate crispy booster bars, I'll buy all they have. I love those things.

Seen it, but speaking of movies about Jesuit missionaries, Black Robe is excellent.

My wife and I support a few different nature organizations. A couple are local, one is national.

I went to a school run by Oblates. Real d$ckhead types. Many of my buds went to the cross town rival ran by Jesuits. Real Fonzie types.

Wheeling WV is a place where Jesuit's become salt of the Earth. In all honesty that is a beautiful little school tucked away in the hills.

To further the political debate, I’d rather everyone tell us how much they donate to charity in lieu of paying taxes (taxation is theft)

The new norm is everyone asking for a handout for their kids super expensive travel sports. I used to give to everyone that asked and finally I quit. Pay for your own kids and I'll pay for mine. Nothing like getting hit up for $50 a pop three times a year by 15 different relatives and friends.

Kids coming to the door happens less and less but I'm always up for some sugar so I cave. Plus like you said, I can respect a kid hustling and doing it on his or her own.

The wife and I give to the National Geographic Society and the very local neighborhood newspaper.

FYP.

Fonzie? You think their persona "cool?" Or are you refering to the leather? They're more fleece and polo I'd say.

One of those "what are they thinking" moments in life, a play-off game held at Rogers, I sat in Airport HS' brewery section. The male cheerleaders ... eh too difficult to describe but let's say very... flamboyant. That group had changed.

I admit to being a hypocrite in this regard. After citing the Matthew passage in several threads, I went and posted in a thread how much I gave to charities. So there went the big screen TV I thought I was getting in heaven. What drove me to do this was all the hubbub about Trump's tax return and the leading Dems publishing their returns. I was amazed that people like Biden and Sanders, despite making a lot more money than I did, gave so little to charity, much less than I gave. That just drove me bonkers. Once again I apologize to the OP for taking his thread in a different direction.

Ralph Malph. Lol. Spot on.

Knew we had a thread on this somewhere. Six young kids were walking near our house over the weekend, saw me lifting something into my truck and started yelling "Wait, Mister - we'll help you!". Dang whippersnappers, thinking I'm an old man and all.

Turns out they were going door-to-door selling the chocolate booster bars. I had a twenty in my wallet, so I bought ten crunch bars for myself and ten caramel for my wife. Mrs. Z works at our middle school, and she recognized them as two middle-schoolers with younger siblings walking with them.

Monday she told me those two stinkers had the nerve to come up to her desk and asked if she wanted to buy any more. :)

Got to love the industrious. Those bars are one of the few fund raisers I'll buy. Obnoxious amount of money for obnoxious cookie dough? No thank you. But $1 for a pretty sizable candy bar, I like the ones with raisons. You bet.

Pornhub is the only organization that deserves my money. The downtrodden can shove it. Solve your own problems.
